Welcome to our website

Key Stage 1

Year 1

Miss Travis's Class

In class 1CT this half term our theme is Enchanted Woodlands.

In writing we have started to look at the book ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The children are very much enjoying this text and they are becoming very confident in re-telling the story.

In maths we are beginning to learn about position and direction where the children will be learning how to use vocabulary such as first, second, third, left and right. We have also been practicing really hard to count in 2s and 10s by singing counting songs.

In Science we will be learning about Animals Including Humans. The children will understand how animals can be grouped and how animals feed in different ways.

In History, the children will be learning about changes within living memory and they will be becoming familiar with the terms past and present. We will be looking at the environment in the local area and understand what has changed over the past few years.

In RE this half term the children will be learning about Incarnation which is linked to the topic of Christmas and why Christmas is an important time of year for Christians.

In DT the children will be designing and making their own snow globe using different materials and techniques with Mrs Hesler.

In PE the children will be doing Dance where they will be focusing on basic movement with Mr Wallace.

Reminders for Parents.

In Year One we teach phonics every day to ensure the children are prepared for the Phonics Assessment which is in June 2020.

Class 1CT have PE every Monday and Thursday. PE kits should always come into school on a Monday for the whole week please.

Homework is given out every Thursday and should be completed and back to the class teacher for the following Tuesday.

Home reading - In Year One we expect all children to read at home with a parent or carer at least three times a week and for the reading diary to be signed every time your child has read. Home reading diaries and books are expected to be in school every single day and the reading books will be changed every Friday.

What a fantastic start to year one we have had, the children have settled well into their new year group and are showing great enthusiasm towards their learning.

Already we have completed our topic called ‘This is me!’ where we looked closely at the area our school is in making maps of our journey to school. We also looked at naming parts of our body and how we use our senses. We carried out our own senses experiments where we had to guess what things were by touch and taste! It was great fun.

Since returning after half term we have begun our new topic ‘Enchanted Woodlands’ we are using the story of the Gruffalo to help us in our learning. As part of our learning we have been acting out the Gruffalo story and verbally retelling it, we used how amazing we are at retelling it, to help us write it. We are currently in the process of designing our own monsters that creatures could meet in the forest; we have some very scary ones!  We will then use these monsters to create our own Gruffalo stories.
In science we are looking closely at different animals answering questions such as:

  • How are they different?
  • Which animal group do they belong to?
  • What do animals eat?

In the next couple of weeks the children will be carrying out a ‘poo’ experiment to see if they can work out which animals left it behind. Don’t panics all poo will be made using shop bought ingredients!
We are using ‘Maths no problem’ in maths to explore numbers within 20 and become confident with addition and subtraction.  We are becoming much more confident at being able to explain our findings and show what we know using the resources.
History this half term will be ‘changes within living memory’ where we will look at how we have changed within our lives. The children will become familiar with using the words past and present and be able to create timelines of their lives.
Mrs Clark will be teaching the children about Incarnation and Why Christmas is important to Christians during RE lessons.
Our PE this half term will be dance and our current PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. It is helpful if children leave their PE kit in school so that if days need to change they are still able to take part.
Home reading - In Year One we expect all children to read at home with a parent or carer at least three times a week and for the reading diary to be signed every time your child has read. Home reading diaries and books are expected to be in school every single day and the reading books will be changed every Friday.

What a fantastic start to Year 1 the children in 1LT have made! Our topic this half term is ‘Enchanted Woodland’. Throughtout this topic we will provide our children with lots of engaging and hands on learning experiences.  As part of our topic we have enjoyed reading The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and retelling the story orally, as well as sequencing sentences to retell the story. We have even created our own creatures just like Julia Donaldson did and made up names for them. Beware if you enter the enchanted woodland because you might see one of our creatures!

In Year 1 children engage in daily writing lessons where the children are encouraged to use capital letters, full stops, finger spaces, neat handwriting and to extend their sentences using ‘and’. Children take part in daily phonics lessons and we encourage the children to apply their phonic skills when reading and writing. Our daily phonics sessions ensure that we prepare children for the Phonics Assessment, which children will complete in June.

Year 1 enjoy exploring ‘Maths No Problem’ in maths lessons, which enables children to become more confident in maths. The children explore maths questions using their resources and are challenged daily with maths problems. This half term children will be using ‘Maths No Problem’ to secure their understanding of numbers to 20, developing their ability to add and subtract numbers and solve problems using their maths skills. They will be beginning to develop their understanding about position and direction and learning how to use vocabulary such as first, second, third, left and right.
As part of our ‘Enchanted Woodland’ topic the children will explore how animals can be grouped in different ways whilst learning and applying new vocabulary. We will be carrying out a very interesting experiment to discover what different animals eat.

In history the children will be learning about changes within living memory and they will use the terms past and present. We will explore our local area and look at the changes over the past few years.
Our PE this half term is dance and we have linked this to our learning about ‘The Gruffalo’ and retold parts of the story through our dancing. Our PE days are Monday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school and that they are not wearing earrings on these days. We encourage children to leave their PE kits in school.

Mrs Clarke will be teaching the children about Incarnation and why Christmas is an important time of the year for Christians.

Homework is given out every Thursday and should be completed and returned to school for the following Tuesday.

In Year One we expect all children to read at home with a parent or carer at least three times a week. We request that parents or carers sign and date the reading diary every time their child has read. Home reading diaries and books are expected to be in school every day and reading books will be changed every Friday.

Our future topics in Year 1 will include ‘Bright lights, Big City’, ‘Towers, Tunnels and Turrets’, ‘Scented Garden’ and ‘Splish, Splash, Splosh’.

Year 2

Miss Cardy's Class

Our teacher is Miss Cardy and she really enjoys listening to music and spending time with her family.

Our Teaching assistant is Mrs Burn and she loves to spend time with her family too, especially out walking her little dog, Archie.

As a class we all love coming to school and we have so much fun in year 2 as we are always learning different things and challenging ourselves.

Over this year we will be covering the following topics:

Autumn 1: This Is Me
Autumn 2: Enchanted Woodland
Spring 1: Big Lights, Big Cities
Spring 2: Towers, Tunnels and Turrets
Summer 1: Scented Garden
Summer 2: Splish, Splash, Splosh

In our class we really enjoy using our imagination in our writing lessons and we think this comes from our whole class story which we read twice each day. It is so much fun.

Our teacher is Ms Lucas, she loves exploring and cooking, but not at the same time, because that would be far too dangerous.  She would probably end up  roasting a snake instead of wrestling with it!  Our teaching assistant is Mrs Carter she loves to play with us and keep us safe during playtimes and lunchtimes.

Each term we explore a new topic, using a fabulous book.  See if you have read any of them:

  • Autumn Term 1: This is Me (We are all Wonders by R.J. Palacio)
  • Autumn Term 2: Enchanted Woodland (The Bear and the Piano by David Lichfield)
  • Spring Term 1 : Big Lights, Big Cities (The Lonely Beats by Chris Judge)
  • Spring Term 2: Towers, Tunnels and Turrets (The Worst Princess by Anna Kemp)
  • Summer Term 1: Scented Garden (The Robot and the Bluebird by David Lucas)
  • Summer Term 2: Splish, Splash, Splosh (Where the forest meets the Sea by Jeannie Baker)

In year 2 we love learning about the world around us, the continents, animal habitats and plants.  As well as how we can be more eco-friendly and help to protect our planet. We will also be learning about The Great Fire of London, the sinking of the Titanic as well as perfecting our 2, 3, 5 and 10 timetables.
